12 STRONG (2018) REVIEW
"12 Strong" isn't your typical Jerry Bruckheimer extravaganza; it's more like a war story with a surprisingly subtle twist – well, as subtle as bombs and gunfire can be, anyway.
Sure, it's got all the usual ingredients: heroic soldiers, epic battles, and enough patriotism to make even Uncle Sam blush. But director Nicolai Fuglsig brings a gritty realism to the action, making you feel like you've been through the war yourself – minus the actual danger, of course. And let's not forget the vibrant sound design that's so immersive, you'll be ducking for cover in your seat.
Technically, it's solid, but where "12 Strong" could use a boost is in its storytelling. It's based on a true story, sure, but that doesn't stop it from feeling a tad long and repetitive. And as for the characters, well, they're about as thinly drawn as stick figures in a kindergarten art class.
Chris Hemsworth leads the pack as Captain Mitch Nelson, a Green Beret with a point to prove. But despite his hunky looks and Thor-like physique, he's constantly underestimated – which is pretty hilarious when you think about it. I mean, who would've thought the God of Thunder would have to work so hard to earn respect?
Joining him are a bunch of other soldiers who, let's face it, blend together faster than camouflage in a forest. Except for Trevante Rhodes, who adds a sweet subplot that's like a ray of sunshine in a sea of khaki.
But hey, you're not here for deep philosophical insights into the Afghan conflict. You're here for some good old-fashioned heroics and maybe a few laughs along the way. And on that front, "12 Strong" delivers – just don't expect it to change your life or anything.
