SISU (2022) REVIEW
In the war-torn ruins of 1944 Finland, amidst the chaos of World War II, emerges the outrageously entertaining spectacle of "Sisu." Director Jalmari Helander concocts a delirious cocktail of violence and nationalism, wrapped in the rugged charm of a grizzled prospector named Aatami Korpi (played by the incomparable Jorma Tommila).
As Korpi embarks on his gold-hunting escapades, dodging bullets and explosions like they're mere inconveniences, you can't help but marvel at the sheer audacity of it all. With his trusty steed and faithful canine companion by his side, Korpi's exploits take him on a wild ride through the Finnish countryside, where Nazis and treasures collide in a whirlwind of mayhem.
But don't be fooled by the superficial splendor of the action-packed narrative. Helander cleverly subverts historical expectations, turning the traditional image of the prospector on its head. Instead of a symbol of colonization, Korpi becomes a symbol of resistance, fighting tooth and nail to protect his homeland's dwindling resources from the clutches of the enemy.
As Korpi's quest unfolds, we're treated to a symphony of absurdity and brutality, with each chapter of the journey punctuated by inventive kills and hokey yet delightful dialogue. The relentless pursuit of the treasure mirrors Korpi's unwavering determination, while the plight of the Finnish women held captive by the Nazis adds layers of complexity to the narrative.
Yet amidst the chaos and carnage, "Sisu" never takes itself too seriously. It revels in its own nonsensicality, embracing the absurdity of its premise with open arms. Villains are delightfully villainous, heroes are gloriously bulletproof, and the whole affair is infused with a sense of reckless abandon that's as infectious as it is entertaining.
So buckle up and join Korpi on his wild ride through the Finnish wilderness. "Sisu" may not offer profound insights or profound commentary, but it's guaranteed to leave you grinning from ear to ear as you're swept along by its sheer audacity and unbridled fun.
