LIFT: Review

 

"Lift" takes audiences on a whirlwind ride through a world of high-stakes heists and adrenaline-pumping action. Directed by F. Gary Gray, known for his previous hits like "Set It Off" and "The Italian Job," the film boasts an all-star cast and promises thrills at every turn.

The story follows a group of seasoned thieves led by the charismatic Cyrus, played by Kevin Hart, as they embark on a daring mission to steal gold bars worth half a billion dollars from a commercial airliner. Along the way, they encounter Interpol agent Abby Gladwell, portrayed by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, whose reluctant collaboration adds an extra layer of tension to the already intense plot.

While "Lift" may not reinvent the wheel when it comes to heist movies, it still manages to deliver plenty of entertainment. The glossy visuals and globetrotting locations, from Venice to London to Brussels, provide a feast for the eyes, even if they sometimes blur together in a whirlwind of excitement.

Hart shines in a departure from his usual comedic roles, bringing a newfound depth to his character as he navigates the complexities of love, loyalty, and betrayal. His chemistry with Mbatha-Raw's Abby adds an extra layer of intrigue to the story, even if their flirtation feels a bit awkward at times.

However, where "Lift" truly shines is in its supporting cast, particularly Billy Magnussen as the delightfully goofy safecracker, Magnus. His performance injects a much-needed dose of levity into the film, reminiscent of Brad Pitt's iconic role in "Burn After Reading."

Despite its strengths, "Lift" does suffer from some pacing issues and a lack of character development, with the banter between the thieves sometimes feeling forced. Additionally, the reliance on flashy editing tricks and repetitive action sequences can make the film feel a bit wearisome at times.
